Within Our Gates

It seems a pity that the controversial black film pioneer Oscar Micheaux is known nowadays mainly for his technically rough and transgressive sound films, when films such as Body and Soul (1924) indicate that he was a highly skilled silent director. Within Our Gates (1919) premiered in Chicago in early 1920 and was then banned for its treatment of a southern lynching. 79 min. (JR)
