Pedro Almodovar’s 1995 comic melodrama seems in many ways his most mature work, in theme as well as executionit’s the movie of a professional bad boy who’s finally growing up. The central character is a secret writer of romance novels whose soldier husband has lost interest in her; one of her best friends, a psychologist, is secretly having an affair with him.
