Leningrad Cowboys Go America

Aki Kaurismaki’s flaky one-note comedy from Finland (1989) about an eight-piece Finnish band with weird hairdos and shoes that tours the American and Mexican boondocks. A reasonably enjoyable (if occasionally monotonous) piece of conscious camp, with Matti Pellonpaa and Kari Vaananen; director and hipster-in-arms Jim Jarmusch puts in a brief cameo. In Finnish with subtitles. 80 min. (JR)
